For anglers who fish first light — and hate getting up for it

First light doesn't wait.

Every angler knows the maths: the best hour of the day costs you the worst minute of the day. 4:30, pitch black, freezing, warm bed — and 'five more minutes' has killed more sessions than bad weather. This is a bedside sunrise that gets you up at 4:30, so you're on the water when it matters. Thirty minutes before your time, the room fills with a warm rising glow; you open your eyes in a room that's already morning. Getting out of a lit room is a decision. Getting out of a black one is a fight. It doesn't wake you louder. It makes leaving the bed easier.

Made for the mornings that matter. The snooze button loses its power when the room is already light.

Why two? Because there's always one in the group who 'couldn't get up'. £69.00 for two is £9 less than buying twice.

One missed dawn is a week of planning, bait and weather-watching gone. This costs less than a decent reel, for every first light this winter.

£39.00 is the whole price.

Why you snooze

An alarm wakes you. It doesn't get you up.

In a black room at 4:30 your body is certain it's still night, because by every signal it has, it is. So the alarm goes off, you're technically awake, and 'five more minutes' wins — the same way it's won every session you've lost. You didn't lack discipline. You were a daytime animal in a blackout.

Thirty minutes of rising light before the alarm tells your body it's morning first. You open your eyes into a lit room, and the argument with yourself never starts.

How it works — three steps, no app

Three steps. It starts before you have to.

130 minutes before your time, the light startsA faint amber glow on the bedside that grows into a warm morning light over half an hour — before the 4:30 you set.
2Your body wakes on the light — usually before any soundYour body has a sunrise detector. Fish feed at first light because of light; it turns out you wake at first light because of light too.
3If you're still out, a soft sound risesIf you're still out at 4:30, birdsong rises from quiet. It's a safety net for the night you fished till midnight, not the plan.

Honest note: light gets most people up about nine mornings out of ten. The sound covers the tenth. We don't sell 'never oversleep again' — you already wake fine; getting up is the war.

An empty swim on a misty lake at first light

Day two is where the sessions die.

Day one you're up at 4:15 without an alarm — excitement did it. Day two the excitement's spent, the legs are dead, the alarm gets silenced half-asleep, and you surface at 8:30 with the best water of the morning behind you. That's the pattern excitement can't fix. It only works once.

Passion gets you up the first morning. Light gets you up the second.

Why not a smart bulb, or just a louder alarm?

Every angler's tried the louder alarm. Here's the honest comparison.

Honest verdict: if you sleep alone and enjoy setting up apps, a bulb can work. If someone shares your bed, or you want it to just work every morning, this is why dedicated sunrise clocks still exist.

Why the £15 ones die in three weeks — and this one doesn't

We bought the cheap clones before we chose this one. They fail the same way: a dawn that jumps from off to bright in three steps, a speaker that crackles at low volume, and a power socket that works loose by the end of the month. The light is the whole point, and theirs isn't a sunrise — it's a light switch with a delay.

This unit is built from ABS and polycarbonate, the same materials as a decent kettle, around LEDs rated for 10,000 hours — about fourteen years of half-hour sunrises. The dimming is smooth from the first glow to full, because that smoothness is the mechanism. And it carries a 12-month warranty: if it develops a fault, we replace it.

What it won't do

Read this before you buy. If any of it is a dealbreaker, it isn't the right thing for you — and we'd rather you knew now.

It won't tie your rig or brew the flask. It gets you upright in a lit room at 4:30. The rest is still on you.

It won't replace sleep. If you fished till midnight, 4:30 will still hurt — just less, and you'll be up.

It won't wake a heavy sleeper on light alone every day. Nine mornings out of ten, honestly. The rising sound covers the tenth.

It needs a plug socket. Mains-powered on purpose. In a bivvy it needs a USB power bank; at home it lives on the bedside.

It's an alarm clock, not a miracle. It changes the worst minute of the hobby, not the hobby.

The specifications, in plain words

Never a number without what it means for your morning.

A 30-minute sunrise, adjustableThe light starts as a faint amber glow and rises smoothly to full brightness by your alarm time. You can make the sunrise shorter or longer.
Light that stays on your sideA bedside glow, not a ceiling light. It lights the sleeper next to it, and leaves the far side of the bed in the dark.
A sound that rises, only if neededNatural sounds — birdsong and others — start quiet and build. Most mornings you're awake before it plays. Snooze with one tap.
More than one wake-up time savedWeekday and weekend, or this week's shift and next week's. Changed on the device in seconds, no app.
A display that dims to nothingStep the clock display down, right to off. No LED glow in the room while you sleep.
A sleeping side tooA sunset fade — light and sound ease out on a timer — and 30 calm sounds (rain, white noise, sea) if you want them. Plays your phone by Bluetooth if you'd rather.
Mains powered by USBPlugs into the wall and stays put. No batteries to die on the one morning it matters.
Small on a nightstandAbout the footprint of a mug. Fits beside the lamp and the phone without taking the table over.

Questions, answered honestly

Why not just a £10 smart bulb?

Some people make it work, and we say so plainly. Three honest differences: a bulb lights the whole ceiling, so it wakes everyone in the room; it has no backup sound, so you still keep the phone alarm; and it needs its schedule edited in an app every time your week changes. This is a bedside glow with a built-in rising sound and saved wake-up times, and it's set up once.

Isn't this expensive for an alarm clock?

It's the price of a takeaway for two, used about 200 mornings a year. People keep good sunrise clocks for ten years and more. The £99–£199 brands do the same job with a fancier logo; the £15 ones do a different, worse job and then stop doing it.

I'm a heavy sleeper. Light won't wake me.

Agreed — light alone doesn't wake everyone every day. In practice it does the job about nine mornings out of ten, and on the tenth the natural sound rises until you're up. We don't promise light-only. We promise the wake-up stops being an ambush.

Will it break in three weeks like the cheap ones?

That's exactly what we bought this to avoid. Smooth dimming, a proper speaker, a socket that stays tight, LEDs rated for 10,000 hours — and a 12-month warranty. If it develops a fault, we replace it.

Is it a gimmick?

It won't change your life. It changes the worst ten minutes of your day — the ten minutes between an alarm going off in a black room and you actually being upright. If that's not worth £39 to you, don't buy it.

I already wake naturally from excitement.

On day one, so does everyone. This is for the winter mornings when excitement isn't enough, and for the day-two wake-up of a weekend session — the one you paid for and slept through.

Can I take it to the bivvy?

It's mains-powered by USB, so at the bank it needs a USB power bank or a 12V socket in the van. It isn't waterproof; keep it inside the bivvy. Most people use it at home for the drive-to-the-water sessions and take it along for weekenders.

What if my wake-up time changes from day to day?

More than one wake-up time is saved on the device, and changing one takes a few seconds on the buttons — no app, no account. Set the sunrise to start 30 minutes before whatever time you pick.

Does the display glow all night?

No. The clock display steps down in brightness and goes fully off. The room is dark until your sunrise starts.
